Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) began as an idea from Martin Cherrington in the early 1960’s. In 1979, Titan Contractors completed the installation of a 40-inch diameter pipeline across a river in Houston which at the time was considered the largest diameter river crossing ever attempted. The installation took ten years and after that HDD took off.
Directional drilling is a perfect solution for underground excavation as it eliminates digging an access pit and diminishes the inherent dangers with crews working underground.
