Your drill pipe works hard. These habits keep it working longer — and keep your projects on schedule.
The most common cause of premature rod failure is over-steering — pushing the pipe past its allowable bend radius. It’s an easy mistake, and an expensive one.
Bend radius is the maximum allowable bend spread evenly over the entire length of the rod. It is not a budget you can spend in one spot.
Example: A rod with a 7.5% bend radius on a 15′ stem = 0.5% per foot — applied evenly across the full length, not concentrated at one end.
Know the bend radius spec for your specific pipe before you drill. Select your drill brand to find your pipe’s bend radius specs.
Under-torqued connections can make up downhole — damaging threads in the process. Over-torqued connections cause their own set of problems.
The connection finishes making up underground, damaging the threads where you can’t see it.
The box flares. The pin mushrooms. Either way, you’ve turned a double-shoulder connection into a single-shoulder — and accelerated thread wear on every rod in the string.
Always make up to the recommended torque for your specific pipe. Not sure what that is? Call us before you drill, not after.
Your lead rod takes the most punishment. If you run 500 feet out and back 10 times, your lead rod has logged a mile — while the last rod in the string barely got dirty. Rotate regularly to even out the wear.
The saver sub sees every piece of pipe twice on every bore. When it wears, it transfers that wear to your drill stem. Replace it when you buy a new rack of rods — every time.
Adding new pipe to an old string? When integrating new rods with used rods in the string, the new rods should be run at the front of the string and the older rods in the back.
Sand, dirt, and grit in the threads will grind them down faster than the job does. Inspect connections before every run. Look for galling, sharp threads, or visible wear. When in doubt, measure and call us.
There’s no single moment — but there are clear signs. Here’s how to check:
Galling or sharp threads mean the rod is close to the end.
Keep jaws at least ½” from the shoulder edge to avoid deformation.
Use calipers to compare the outside diameter of pin and box ends against new pipe specs.
